Hello, is anyone going on the The Ultimate Alps and Dolomites 2025 departing July 3? Is anyone planning on taking a trip to the Neuschwanstein Castle? Any tour you would recommend? Thank you!

  • I have heard that the Neuschwanstein Castle is a must. We are doing this trip on June 26th

  • We've been there and the views are spectacular. He was definitely a mad king with interesting story. We rode there in horse and carriage, too. We're on this tour in September.

Neuschwanstein Castle is picturesque and interesting, internally, externally, and historically. Tauck used to go there during Ultimate Alps and Dolomites. We rode up to and down from the castle in horse-drawn carriages.

A few things to note, however, it is not an old medieval castle- construction began in 1869 and it was mostly completed by 1880. King Ludwig moved in (the still unfinished castle) in 1884. At the time of his death in 1886, the palace was still far from complete. For comparison, the Builtmore Estate in Asheville, NC was constructed between 1889–1895. If Ludwig had not run out of money and suffered an untimely death (assassination?) he planned to build an even more majestic, fanciful, and less accessible castle. it was to be called Falkenstein. Ludwig had already purchased the site! It, like Neuschwanstein, was also to be designed by Christian Jank, a set designer for operas by composer and Ludwig's idol, Richard Wagner.

View from Marienbrücke (Marie's Bridge, named after Ludwig's mother, Marie of Prussia.) It is directly behind the castle and requires a bit of a steep walk to reach.
