Budapest to Amsterdam by Riverboat - Day 14
My wife and I will be taking this cruise in Fall 2025. Day 14’s itinerary calls for a tour of the Rijksmuseum followed by a luncheon cruise through the Amsterdam canals. I was thinking about scheduling a tour of the Van Gogh Museum after the canal cruise. I’m wondering if there’s enough time between the end of the planned excursion and dinner to visit the Van Gogh Museum?

Whatever you find out or decide, you will need to book timed tickets well in advance
We were on this river cruise a few years ago. We had tickets for the Anne Frank house for 3PM. At 2:30 we asked the TD if we would make it there on time. He said probably not If we continued on the boat. He then asked the crew to let us get off the boat in front of the Frank house and they did. I don’t know how much longer the boat ride lasted. We also had Van Gough tickets for that day which we were unable to use. I would definitely book tickets for sometime after 3PM for the museum.
Eleonore, thank you for your reply. Since you got off the canal boat before that tour ended, I assume you had to find your own way back to the riverboat after you finished at the Anne Frank house?
Yes we took a taxi back to boat.
Everyone has different priorities on what to see and do. If the VGM is on your must do list, here is an option. Go to the Rijksmuseum. I assume the tour will be close to opening time at 9 am and will last 2.5 hours. Skip the canal cruise with the group and take the short walk to the VGM. Grab a walking lunch on the way. As mentioned, you will need tickets well in advance. Afterwards, You can then grab tram 2 or 12 right in front of the VGM to centraal station. Pay by tapping in and out using your credit card or Apple Pay. The ship will be docked either to the right or the left of the station. If you still want a canal cruise with you may still have time. There are larger cruise boats along the Damrak street just across the plaza from the station. The smaller boats like Captain Jacks or Amsterdam Boat Adventure are able to go down the smaller canals and imo are a better choice. They leave from several different locations. We used ABA in April and it was awesome.
Ben, thanks for the advice!
Since the canal cruise is such a unique experience and one we thoroughly enjoyed, I wouldn’t want to miss it. I think you will have time to see the museum but if that is the final night on the boat, you might not have sufficient time to get ready for the farewell dinner.
Kfnknfzk, thank you for your input.
Best wishes!
