Deet or Picaridin for Elegant South Africa
Hey everyone! I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about using DEET over Picaridin for bug repellent, and I’m a bit confused. From what I understand, both Picaridin and DEET are equally effective, but Picaridin tends to be preferred because it’s odorless, non-greasy, and doesn’t damage plastics or synthetics. So, why does DEET still seem to be the go-to choice?
I’m going on a trip in September and, unfortunately, mosquitoes love me, so I want to make sure I’m prepared. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I've used both on multiple trips and found them effective. I prefer Picaridin for the reasons you mentioned: odorless, non-greasy. I always found DEET to be unpleasant to apply and wear. The colors of the clothing you wear are also important. Light colors tend to repel mosquitoes, dark colors attract them.
I previously took the trip you're scheduled for, it's fantastic. Enjoy!
The color of clothing is irrelevant for mosquitoes. Don’t confuse them with tsetse flies. I just think Deet does a better job at advertising or is easier to write and say.
Thank you for the information. I think I will go withthe Picaridin. I'm looking forward to my trip!
Been to Africa several times. The first time brought our own bug spray but after that relied on the insect repellent sprays provided by each safari camp
