On our Tauck stop in Budapest (2024) our group went to a restaurant called Urban Betyar. The main floor was decorated with old Soviet style everyday items - tvs, radios, appliances, etc... It was meant to be quirky and humorous and interesting, and (imo) it was! Another section (I believe downstairs) was like a museum of rural home life. The food was good, and it was definitely a different kind of experience. Look it up, and you can find reviews and photos.
Our hotel was located next to the park with the big ferris wheel, and we walked to the restaurant.
It's been a few years since we were in Budapest but I remember that the food was wonderful. I suspect you can find a number of good, well priced restaurants.
We just finished this tour a little over a month ago. In Bucharest, we ate a couple of times at an Italian restaurant near the Intercontinental hotel. It was call Don Vito Trattoria. It was on the TD's restaurant list. We enjoyed their pizzas, especially the crusts.
In Budapest we enjoyed a meal at Rézkakas Bistro Easy Terasz. It was a couple of blocks from the hotel on the way to St Stephens.
A must have in Budapest is Chimney Cake, in the ice cream cone shape, filled with either gelato, sorbets or soft ice cream.
On my first trip to Budapest (in 2014), I had a very nice meal at Rezkakas Bistro. I think it may be the same one that Smiling Sam went to. The address is 1051 Budapest, Sas u. 3. There is an English version of the website.
MCD - Yes it is the same restaurant.
You can‘t beat Bagolyvar in Budapest. Not only is the food delicious and reasonably priced, you will also find it full of locals. We joined one couple singing Happy Birthday even though we didn’t know much Hungarian. Very friendly non touristy place. Afterward we asked the cab driver taking us back to our hotel ( not a Tauck tour ) to drive us by all the beautifully lit landmarks - Heroes Square, the Chain Bridge and Parliament. I find Budapest at night as beautiful, if not more beautiful. than Paris.
Thank. Exploring all of the options.
