School visit on Family Tanzania Safari

Please note if your Bridges tour is making the school visit in Tanzania: We took soccer balls and school supplies. However they really need books in English that are appropriate for a primary school. This would have been so easy for us to take 4 or 5 each had we been aware. Books ordered or sent are hundreds of dollars each (yes really) as opposed to those hand carried. We had a separate checked suitcase filled with donated items then we refilled it with our souvenirs for the return trip. Worked out well.
Amazing family trip.

    Growing Tumaini's Libraries Together
At Tumaini, students love to read. Whether they’re researching for class or getting lost in a novel, our libraries are central to daily life. In rural Tanzania, where most schools lack libraries entirely, Tumaini stands out. Our campuses offer well-stocked shelves, a digital catalog, dedicated librarians, and welcoming spaces that spark curiosity and a love of reading
Building these libraries has taken years of care and teamwork. For over a decade, books have arrived at Tumaini in the suitcases of friends, volunteers, and visiting groups. This spring, seven students from Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, visited through our cultural exchange program, active since 2014. They brought 120 books, plus school supplies and sports gear, to enrich student life
Our students are eager for more books that reflect their lives and interests. We're focusing on expanding our graphic novel collection, which builds English skills, and adding books by African authors, which help students see themselves in the stories. They’re also seeking more advanced titles as they prepare for university.
This year, we're taking a new approach. Instead of carrying books from abroad, we're buying books locally.

    This lets us:

    Support local booksellers in Tanzania

Respond to student and teacher requests

Get books into kids' hands faster

From Swahili-English dictionaries to African novels and advanced science texts, these are the books our students are excited to read.

My husband and I have supported the nearby hospital for over ten years now. What is so good about supporting either cause is that almost all the money is used for them unlike other charities.
