Kyoto Dinner recommendations?

We're on the Sept 25 Essence of Japan - anyone have any good recommendations for dinner in Kyoto? We have two nights on our own.

    Many small Japanese restaurants have plastic reconstructions of their dishes in the window. Figure out what you want to order before you go in. Then take the waiter/waitress to the front and point to what you want. It's no problem and expected that Gaijin will do that. That’s why they have those dishes displayed.

    Gaijin = foreigner who does not speak Japanese. Used for both singular and plural (no s for plural).

    [My experience is from quite a few years back. They may have English menus now.]

    1. Kappo Harada, Michelin starred, 2. Shin, 3. Le Un (spectacular river view, site of A&K farewell dinner) 4. Tohyka Motonari(One Michelin starred, famous for its open charcoal grill), tried them all myself thanks to one of Tauck's competitor. Absolutely delicious. I think Both Tauck and the other company go to Yasuke Yamaji at Gion but the menu was vastly different just like the menu on Ponant when it is chartered by the other company.

  • If you go shopping at Daimaru, Kyoto, Go to Wagyu Yakiniku oh-yoke which is just across the street. The food is delcious and the menu is in English. It gets crowded very early. Ichiran Ramen is about one block away. Everything is in English but you have to order at a machine at the door. The dessert place next to Four Seasons Kyoto and the restaurant at the hotel are also amazing. The dessert place opens at irregular hours and the Lobster Thermidor at the four Season is more reasonably priced than the Wagyu steak or Kobe steak.

    Enjoy your trip, don't miss going to Daimaru. If you have free time(I am sure you will due to Tauck) go to Kyoto National Museum which is one block from the hotel. This place specializes in ancient Japanese arts.

    Tauck skipped Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari, two can't miss sites. Do it on the two days you are on your own! So much fun!
