How does dinner work?

My husband and I will be going on the small group trip in October. I’m looking forward to a nice dinner at 1902. How does this work with Tauck? Is there a special set menu or can I order whatever I like? First with trip with Tauck, so I’m not sure what to expect. Anyone else going - Oct 13?

I don't believe we ever had a fixed menu- we either had a choice of several mains- meat (beef, chicken, etc.), fish, pasta/vegetarian or off the menu, even at 1902. The most limited menus were at the welcome dinner at the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea and the farewell dinner at the Mena House, but even then you typically had 2, 3 or more choices..

A couple of times we had a family/semi buffet style "experience" dinner or lunch - Mediterranean/Middle Eastern meze- mostly in Jordan- lunch at Khayl and Layl after visiting Jerash, lunch after visiting the Church of St. George in Madaba to see the mosaic map on the floor, and the Bedouin dinner at Little Petra. You had the choice of several restaurants for lunch/dinner at the hotel on the Dead Sea and at the Mena House in Cairo. The Nile river cruiser offered several choices. All breakfasts on land and the boat were buffets. The worst meal by far and worst of nearly 20 tours was the box lunch on the charter flight from Aqaba to Aswan.

If you have dietary restrictions, make sure you tell the TD.

  • Thank you, AlanS. I’m fine with the shared small plate stuff at lunch, but I want to pick out my own food for dinner! Sounds like I should take some food with me for that flight from breakfast! Thankfully, no dietary restrictions, but when I travel it is to see things, have experiences and eat good food!

  • Hi. We are going in Sept. will give you an update.

  • Keep me posted and enjoy the trip!

  • Lkymom, still enjoying? I would love to get any suggestions from you!

  • Dinner at the 1902 is just like going out to any restaurant you pick your time, you get your table. We selected off a menu so there were options, just don't remember if it was smaller than a normal menu.I had a steak, my niece had risotto and I can't remember what my nephew ate. I will say, that it was our Tauck group in that restaurant and no one else. All the other guest were eating at the outdoor restaurant. And it was a lovely environment with its history, but I would have chosen to eat outdoors too. Food was Okay, nothing spectacular. Best food of the journey was on the Nile cruise. Enjoy it for the atmosphere but it won't be your best meal of the journey.

  • Ms78, thanks for those details about 1902, I will enjoy the atmosphere! Do you remember anything about the Dead Sea Kempinski? We get there a few days before the actual start of the tour and I don’t want to realize I should have eaten at the Fish restaurant or go to another hotel, because that isn’t an option with the tour. Thoughts?

  • Katherine. I started my tour November 29,2023, so the area was sort of empty due to security concerns. (We had no issues and never felt unsafe). So I know one of the restaurants was closed due to lack of tourists. We ate all our meals at the Obelisk and thought the food was quite good. It’s a buffet but I believe you can order off a menu also. I must encourage you to take advantage of the spa. It truly was the best spa treatment I’ve ever had. We did the combo mud wrap, exfoliation, then rinse off followed by massage. To say it was heavenly is an understatement. It’s such a treat, especially after a long journey to get there. Enjoy your trip. It is a fascinating journey!

  • The spa is on the agenda. Hoping to avoid buffets! Thanks for quick response.
