This is a private hike in the afternoon.
Hi Karen 1957. My husband and I hiked to the Lake Agnes Tea House from the Chateau Lake Louise and loved it. It was back in 2005 and we did it on our own. When we were almost to the Tea House, we saw the top of a bear’s ears crossing our path, over a knoll. There was another couple hiking with us, that we got to know. The woman and I started to run (even though you are NOT supposed to do that) down the path and the two guys stayed. My husband said he was so close to the tea house, he really wanted to get photos.
After we stopped running, we met a Canadian couple who live there and were in training to hike Mount Everest. They had heavy back packs: were knowledgeable about the area: and knew of this grizzly bear and said that she (and her cub!) were not aggressive. The bear was known by her number (bear #56). I started to walk back up the trail with them and met up with my husband. They said to keep talking because you don’t want to startle the bear. Of course, they were hiking at a brisk pace and we were panting to keep up with them, but felt safe hiking along side of them.
At the Tea House, the Canadians, kept going on and we turned back after taking photos. There were some other people just starting their hike and they had bells on their packs. The Canadians told us that those bells are called bear bells, but also known as dinner bells. Back at the hotel, we told the front desk about our experience and they were very concerned and said they were going to close the trail for awhile.
We now carry bear spray when we hike in bear country, but still keep talking. It’s probably a good idea to have a guide go with you. This was our first Tauck Tour and we booked another trip to this area for 2026. Have a great time!
It’s years since we went and then there were bears so we could not go.
No bears on our hike round-trip, but better to be safe than sorry! Have fun, it's gorgeous! First activity we did was take a red canoe across Lake Louise and back! Stick your feet in the water 😆
