Seeking recent travelers on Tuscany and Cinque Terre

I'll try this one last time to see if anyone has done this tour this year. Looking for packing advice. Specifically, are hiking boots really necessary? There is no description in the itinerary of a hike for this tour, only an optional "steep climb" to a castle on Day 7. I would likely skip this. Tauck agent says hiking boots probably not necessary, but I was hoping for feedback from someone who has been recently.
(Would also love feedback for Piedmont tour but not necessary). Thank you!

  • In case anyone else is wondering, I did finally get some information from Guest Relations about this tour and the Week In Piedmont:

"On the Tuscany, Cinque Terre & Portofino we don’t really have a “hike” per se – so I think if you have decent sneakers, like walking / running shoes, you would be fine. We consider this journey a level 4 activity journey because there is quite a bit of walking over uneven surfaces (cobblestones) and steps without options for elevators. Several optional activities would be considered level 4 activities, like the bike ride and the walk to La Cervara Abbey which is significant. But all can be accomplished with comfortable walking shoes."

For the Piedmont tour, hiking shoes were advised because the truffle hunting activity can be steep and muddy.

  • We visited Tuscany, Umbria and Cinque Terre in 2022. No need for hiking boots imo. Just bring comfortable walking shoes/athletic shoes with decent traction.

  • OK thank you! This confirms what I was told.
