Clothing for Antarctica
Ladies who had been on this trip, please give me your advice regarding clothing. How many pairs of waterproof pants did you take and were they fleece lined. Do you need another coat to wear in addition to the parka while on excursions? What other clothing suggestions/ recommendations do you have and also what didn't take but wish you had? My husband and I going in mid-January. Thanks for your help.

Well, I'm not a lady, but the waterproof pants I have are just waterproof. No lining. I wear a pair of some kind of fleece lined pants under them.
While aboard the ship between excursions it was fairly common to see people wearing ski skins or other warm undergarments and then doning the outer layers before leaving the ship. The parka and waterproof pants are not enough. I brought boot liners but my wife just used socks. Posted before but I’ll post again.
On the other hand there were times like this.
Just a point I don’t want to overstate. This is not a Caribbean Cruise, it is an expedition. Those black things we are wearing around our chest are life preservers.
My polar trips were with Quark Expeditions. I took one pair of unlined waterproof pants to wear on excursions and I wore multiple base layers under them. The same under the waterproof parka that had a removable puffer lining. I also wore two pairs of wool socks with the waterproof, insulated muck boots. Creating a packing list will help you not forget anything.

I only packed one pair of waterproof pants; I also wore Icebreaker brand 260 base layer pants, silk long johns and fleece ski liner leggings underneath. My top included the Icebreaker brand 260 weight merino base layer top , silk long John top, and full zip hoodie under the provided parka. I wore merino wool socks and silk sock liners. I didn't wear another jacket under the provided jacket. I wore a merino neck gaiter and wool/cashmere blend hat and polarized full coverage sunglasses
I'm a minimalist packer. On the ship I wore a heavy knit legging type pant, and the icebreaker merino wool jacket with boots. This was warm enough for whenever we were called by the captain to go outside to see something spectacular. I didn't being anything I didn't use, I left behind the think merino wool socks that I hadn't worn for the staff . If you leave anything behind, remember to leave a note that you are leaving them for the staff. They tracked me down to let me know I was leaving something behind.
On our recent trip to Iceland we noticed a couple of the crew were wearing the Antarctica parkas. We wore them primarily because we wanted the parkas to cross both the Antarctic and the Arctic Circle. We could have done with less but the parkas were comfortable.
