Things to do safely in Guayaquil

We will be arriving in the morning of the day prior to flying out of Guayaquil for the Galapagos and the Isabella II. We are staying at the Wyndham Guayaquil Puerto Santa Ana which I presume is where prior Cruising the Galapagos tours have stayed prior to and after the Galapagos cruise. Any suggestions for things to do, places to eat, safety concerns, safe eating concerns? Thank you again for the benefit of your experience.

Been to Guayaquil twice. These days it’s not safe to walk around. There has been a lot of unrest. You won’t be missing anything. Rest up and eat at the hotel. If there is a spa, maybe use that. The times we were there it was two different hotels

Just looked and Google says the same

Guayaquil faces significant safety challenges due to high levels of gang-related crime and violence, prompting many governments to advise against travel to certain areas. While central tourist areas like Malecon 2000 and Las Peñas can be relatively safe with precautions, travelers should exercise extreme caution, avoid certain high-risk zones (like north of Portete de Tarqui Ave.), avoid being out alone at night, and be vigilant against armed robbery, theft, and scams, relying on reputable transport like hotel-affiliated taxis or rideshares.
    Key Safety Concerns
High Crime: High murder rates, primarily driven by organized crime and drug trafficking, make it dangerous.
Targeted Attacks: Gangs have used explosives and made false bomb threats in public areas, including near government buildings.
Petty Crime: Armed robbery, phone snatching, and ATM scams are common, especially in crowded areas and airports.
Nighttime Danger: Walking alone at night, even in tourist spots, increases risks significantly.
    Safety Tips for Visitors
Avoid High-Risk Zones: Steer clear of areas like Tarqui, Duran, and parts of the city north of Portete de Tarqui Avenue.
Transportation: Use hotel-arranged taxis, Uber/Cabify, or phone-booked taxis; avoid hailing cabs on the street.
Valuables: Don't display expensive jewelry or electronics; carry only necessary cash and cards.
Situational Awareness: Stay alert in crowds, keep windows up and doors locked in cars, and be wary of distractions.
Nighttime: Stick to well-lit, popular areas and take registered transport home after dark.
    Overall Verdict
Guayaquil can be visited, but it requires a high degree of caution, awareness, and adherence to safety protocols, similar to other large cities but with elevated risks due to the current security situation. Always check current travel advisories from your government before traveling

  • Thank you for that helpful info. I wonder if the Malecon 2000 is safe during daylight hours and seems to run right through where the hotel is?

  • We have walked there, it’s ok but wouldn’t say, wow you have to see this. If you go out, do take off your jewelry, only take a bit of cash and be aware of your surroundings. Speak to the hotel concierge and get the latest assessment. We love the Galapagos, we are going again in the summer….this trip, it starts in Quito
    .

  • Last time I was in Quayaquil (many years ago), we took a hacienda tour...............there are probably day trips out of city the concierge can recommend?
