Could use advice, please!

Hello, my husband and I will be leaving in early May for this tour. One question...should we bring our hiking boots for Machu Picchu? They are lightweight but take some space. Please advise...
Thank you, alll!

I don't know what various shoes are called but I wear some Merrills that are sort of lightweight hiking shoes. Wore them to Machu Picchu no problem. I wore them for most of the trip so they are not full fledged hiking boots. Walking at Machu Picchu is not difficult.

Perhaps someone who is more familiar with what different shoes are called can give better names.

[If you want a preview of the visit to Machu Picchu, go to https://www.mikeandjudytravel.com/2021-1Galapagos-01.htm The Peru part, including Machu Picchu, is in the first couple of web pages.]

  • If you plan to hike some of the Inca Trail, you may need them, but at British state, not needed for the actual Machu Picchu site. It is spectacular....................

  • Shoes with good tread are helpful.

  • Didn’t state anything. I have not been to Machu Picchu. Have been to Galapagos a couple of times and suggest good soles with ankle support for walking on the jagged lava on some islands.

  • Sorry - meant Mike.

  • Like Mike, I recommend Merrill's. I wear the classic Merrill Moab, which you find everywhere. It doubles as a good shoe for rainy days. If you are not doing the trail, the issue is steps of varying heights and not a lot of rails to count on on the way down. I suppose after a rainy it can be more difficult too. I'd recommend having walking sticks with you - whether you pick up something on site yourself or with TD assistance, or you bring some yourself. And make sure they have rubber tips. Costco Online has a nice double set at an affordable price if this is a one time thing. Enjoy your trip.

  • Sevenseas makes a good point. The TD bought us walking sticks before we got on the train to Machu Picchu. If your TD doesn't there are lots of people selling walking sticks and they're not expensive. Maybe better than packing your own.
