OPINIONS: Michigan's Lakes & Mackinac Island

Any comments on the tour Michigan's Lakes & Mackinac Island?
I am thinking about taking that tour in 2027. Would love to hear feedback from people who have done this tour already.
Thanks!

  • We enjoyed the tour. But….we got a very cheap special price from Tauck, otherwise we would have never booked it, it is super expensive and would rather spend our money on an exotic foreign trip.

  • We took the small ship version of this tour so I do not know how much itinerary overlap there is. There were many issues with just about every excursion—very much an anomaly and through no fault of Tauck.

The ship experience was extremely disappointing, especially the lack of amenities and disappointing food. I have been on ferries in Scandinavia with more class and ambience.

Nonetheless, we enjoyed most of the towns. Mackinac was our favorite. I think the land tour includes an overnight stay at the hotel. I think you will enjoy that. The hotel and quaint town were lovely experiences, especially the carriage ride.

We did an unguided trip to Mackinac last year and enjoyed it very much, The Grand Hotel is grand, and old, if not necessarily great. We took a private carriage ride, much better it seemed than the public tour offered downtown.

  • Hi Capstar. My husband, adult son, and I took this tour in 2023 and we really liked it. Our tour guide was new to Tauck. We were her 6th tour and she added so many surprises to the trip that were really special. We went off the established route a few times to see something special. The bus driver had lived in Michigan all his life and he shared several stories (stopped the bus - not while driving) about places that we visited that only a native resident would know. The Music House Museum was outstanding. If you have visited the music museum on the Rhine River tours, that museum is very good, but not as good as the Music House Museum. The tall ship boat ride was very nice and, again, they made it fun. The Alden B. Dow house was amazing. The resident historian at Grand Hotel was excellent and held everyone's attention during his presentation. The horse and carriage ride around Mackinac Island was very nice. The driver included some extra areas that were his personal favorites. The winery and dinner were wonderful. We had a blast dancing at the Motown party. Riding in a Model T at Greenfield Village was cool. For my family, it was a great vacation.

  • What a great narrative of your experiences, Eddy. Thank you for sharing. I would love to take this land version, even if there is some overlap in the itinerary. Again, thanks.

  • Oh, my experiences was on the small ship version.

  • Thank you all, for your comments. Eddy, I hope if I go , I get your tour guide!! What was her name?
