Any favorite travel books to recommend?
I so much enjoyed The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah that we booked a Rhone River cruise next year. Book blurb compares it to The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah and Sarah’s Key. If you are traveling to Western Canada the mystery series by Lane Winslow is good. They are sequential so start with the first book. If you’re more into nonfiction Dreaming in French by Alice Kaplan is set in Paris.
Always looking for a good read if you have one to share.

For Iceland, the Inspector Erlendur Series by Arnaldur Indridason is good. The series is crime fiction but the author has the Inspector go to various places in Iceland and describes each place in detail. Also describes what the people there are like. A good insight into Iceland.
I thoroughly enjoyed In A Sunburned Country before I went to Australia and Turn Right At Machu Picchu before Peru.
Do read 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' before going to Matera / A Week in Puglia.
I loved Michelangelo and the Pope’s ceiling, by Ross King. It was great history before visiting the Vatican.
Wilbur Smith’s Courtney Series was fun to read before our tour of Namibia.
Before going to Sicily, read Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano books.
Daughter of Egypt by Marie Benedict.
Any of James Michener's books - based on your destination: Hawaii, Mexico, Poland, Texas. Alaska, Caribbean, Iberia, Chesapeake, The Source (Israel), The Covenant (South Africa), etc.
Michener’s novels are so beautifully written and although considered fiction, they do accurately capture the culture of the regions he writes about. I think my husband has read all of his works. ‘The Source’, ‘The Covenant’, ‘Iberia’ and ‘Poland’ are my favorites.
Agreed - I also enjoyed Centennial. I was in the hospital and read it all the way through (many years ago).
I agree with fknknfzk -- I've read all of those books before trips to the areas in which they take place. "The Source" is among my all-time favorite books.
VS Naipaul’s trilogy about his trips to India from the 1960’s through the early 1990’s are excellent for India travellers. Naipaul was dejected after his first trip, but noted significant progress in his later books; very well-written
