Extra Day in Halifax

My husband are arriving in Halifax one day early before beginning our "Canadian Maritimes" tour next month. Any suggestions as to what can see in Halifax with that extra time, that is not included in Tauck's itinerary?

  • Halifax is a delightful city.

Don't miss the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Don't expect an institution the size of the National Gallery in London, but an exquisite collection reflecting the life and times of Nova Scotia. There is a splendid display of the work of the renown folk artist, Maud Lewis. There is a small gallery shop selling, among other things, small pieces of jewellery from local artists. I love wearing mine!

Another suggestion is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic … with a wonderful exhibition on the fate of the Titanic. Tiny leather shoes will tug at your heart strings. Still on the maritime theme is the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21.

For anyone interested in Scottish and Irish history and the manmade tragedies that sent millions of people to the other side of the world, who founded and built the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island … even Newfoundland … a day spent wandering though the streets of Halifax is a wonderful experience. And no, I haven't forgotten the Arcadians, but you said you only have 1 day.

    Cheers,

    Jan
  • Thank-you so much Jan. Your suggestions sound like the perfect way to spend some of that "free time" we'll be having in Halifax, before the tour "officially" begins!! We travelled with you before...we took the "Spirit of the Southwest" tour with you in September 2012! Names: Irene and John...It was a pleasure to be in contact with you again...

Small world, Irene & John! Wasn't that a great trip! I was just looking at some of my shots the other day. I would love to see more of the south west. Monument Valley is calling to me! Southern Utah is stunning.

You will really enjoy the Maritimes. I've take both Tauck trips they currently have available. I took the shorter one because they had dumped the longer one. Then, when they relisted it a few years later, I just had to return. I didn't have as much spare time in Halifax for the second visit as I did for the first. I didn't have time to get back to the Art Gallery, which was a real shame. And the food is great. Lobster, PEI mussels, more lobster … ah… yummy memories! And lovely locals!

    Cheers,

    Hello Irene,

My wife and I just finished this tour in July. Everything you want to see in Halifax is very close to the hotel as it is a small city. There is a Victorian garden that you will briefly visit on your tour, but since it is a short walk from the hotel, you may want to spend a little more time there on your own. There is also a casino close by if you are interested.

Halifax is a wonderful, clean city and the people are incredibly friendly, but frankly, there are not that many touristy things to do that are not covered on the trip.

Directly across the street from the hotel is a restaurant...The Keg. Three others in my group tried the steak which they said was outstanding. I ordered the salmon and it was the best I've had. I'm offering a suggestion for meat and salmon because if you are going on this trip to enjoy lobster it will be on the menu every single day for lunch and dinner. Even the die-hard lobster lovers on the trip had to cry "uncle" by the end.

Never! I will never cease to be amazed how delicious … and affordable … lobsters are in the Maritime provinces. All our best crayfish are exported. We never see them, except for yabbie sized tiddlers at Christmas! Eat up and enjoy!

    Hello, John!!
Thanks so very much for taking the time to reply to my post. I especially appreciate the recommendation of the restaurant across the street from the hotel, The Keg. We'll definitely check it out. I know I shouldn't admit this, but both my husband and I, are NOT seafood eaters!! Do they have alternative choices for us "land lubbers"? If not, this may be one vacation where I return home a few pounds lighter, instead of heavier!!
    Thanks again,
    Irene
  • I am on the Canadian Maritimes tour currently. I just wanted to correct a misconception. Someone mentioned that there is a stop at the Public Gardens on the tour, but there is not. There is simply a drive-by on the morning of the Halifax city tour. So the gardens are definitely something to check out on arrival day. I am sorry I did not as I thought they would be part of the itinerary.

  • Personally, if I have extra time in any place, I try to explore some cool food to kill time while enjoying something yummy :)
Last time I've been to Toronto and had like half a day till my flight I found out about this website that shows you best restaurants near me. That day I tried sushi burrito and some amazing ice cream where you basically create it yourself.
I'm sure there are other great spots in Halifax too!
