In reading the books suggested by Tauck, I read that Africa puts a 10% charge on all items purchased with a credit card. Did anyone find that to be true at this time? We have a credit card that doesn't have any charges for out of USA purchases, but if Africa does it makes a big difference. We are leaving on June 27, 2012.

    Get in touch with your credit card provider in the States and ask them which countries in Africa, if any, where a surcharge applies. Your own bank should be able to advise you what foreign currency might be useful to take with you, perhaps, and facilitate any FX purchases. At least you have plenty of time for research before you go!

    Travel guide books are very helpful ... couldn't do without them! ... but the information in them regarding finance (not their core business!!) is usually anecdotal. Better to go to the horse's mouth!

    Eastern Africa is a wonderful part of the universe. You are bound to have a fabulous time!
