Free day-things to do?

We are going on the October 3 Lisbon to Madrid tour. We are arriving on the 1st in the evening and have the 2nd to do some touring on our own oe with someone on our tour. Knowing Taucks tour is all encompassing does anyone have some ideas for 1/2 day tours? We tried to book a Jewish Tour of Lisbon but it’s either booked or the 8 hour tour included other sites that Tauck will cover.

    We have walked all over Lisbon, but it is hilly. The street cars are a fun way to see the city, but mid-day they are packed. Early morning, or after six you might find seats.

    How was the weather in Portugal/Spain in early Sept? We're leaving on the 28th (next week)-seems unseasonably warm.

    Castelo de S. Jorge is worth visiting as is the tile museum. Neither is on the tour.
