What to do in San Jose?

We are spending an extra day in San Jose at the end of our tour with two kids age 12 & 9. Any recommendations of what to do in San Jose? Appreciate any feedback!

  • We'll be on the June 18 tour, and are also staying an extra day in San Jose. There's a big park next to the Intercontinental that is supposed to be just wonderful. The Poas volcano is near enough for a day trip. There are walking tours of San Jose, which will require a cab ride into the downtown area. My grandson, who is 11, says he wants to hang by the pool and relax. So we're going to play it by ear and perhaps take a volcano/waterfall/butterfly tour via the concierge desk if we get tired of poolside lounging.
  • Just back from the Pura Vida tour, which was wonderful. Stayed at the Grano de Oro Hote--loved it! Came in a day early; took a cab ($4) to the National Museum, which provides a great overview of Costa Rican history, and leisurely walked back to the hotel, viewing some of the historic buildings and whimsical and serious statues along the way. Others on our trip enjoyed the docents in period dress tour of the National Theater. Got back to the hotel with time to enjoy the roof terrace and jacuzzi. The Sabana Park is just a few blocks in the other direction from the hotel. Lots of fun finding your way as there is very little street signage in the city!

  • We did the Panama Canal small boat tour and stayed at the Marriott in San Jose. Spectacular place. We had no inclination to leave that resort to go anywhere.
