Alaska Family Call If The Wild

I wanted to ask about restaurant service and food at hotels on summer 2021 trips to Alaska. We went on the Cowboy Country trip 2021 and had major issues with dining both in Jackson Lake Lodge and Yellowstone. Just wondering if this happened on the Alaska trip as well. Planning to go Summer 2022. Thanks in advance for any information someone may have.

Do you mean the quality of food or service? Service is never very good even in non Covid times, they never seem to have enough staff and they are generally inexperienced young people.
We were in those areas with Tauck just a few years ago on an adult tour, I can’t recall about the food. You just have to put up with what is available in these remote areas and focus on the scenery.

We were not with Tauck, but did stay at the Alyeska and Captain Cook this past summer. Food quality was very good at both. Service was good at Captain Cook, maybe a little Covid-related slow at Aleyska. Not terrible though. Enjoy the trip.

Any time you go to a US national park the workers are usually seasonal college students. They wear name tags that include the state or country they are from. This is an experience for them and should not be confused with dining in a professional setting. If you are there early in the season, this could be their first week on the job. Food is basic. In the morning if you are under time constraints and there is a buffet choose the buffet.

You will also find that many rangers in the parks are seasonal employees. You may find school teachers who go to Alaska during the summer to work for the park service as rangers. There will be a few year round rangers but this seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

Enjoy the scenery. Partake of the salmon. You can save the fine dining until you are on the cruise ship.
