I believe this is an Activity Level 2 tour so not exactly serious hiking. The main thing is well broken-in, comfortable shoes or boots. I do alot of touring in the southwest and own a pair of Merrells lowrise lace ups with Vibram soles. The Vibram gives them good grip on slippery surfaces like rocks. The low rise is better for hot SW summers.
If you buy new shoes wear them asmuch as you can to make sure they are going to be comfortable for all day wear. For evenings bring something to change into. Nice to give your feet a break.
