May 3 2019 trip

Hi
We are arriving on May 2 and also staying one day later. Any suggestions of things to do in Athens on our own? Also any suggestions of tours to do when we have a choice? Would love to hear more reviews of this trip. Thanks

Arriving only one day early is not enough time due to distance, but a (full) day trip to Delphi (as in the Oracle of Delphi and the Pythian Games) with car/driver/guide is one suggestion for your extra day after the tour. There are plenty of tour providers. There are many things to see and do in Athens also. Using the itinerary on the website, make a list of what you will see with Tauck, then check online for other "Things to See/Do in and near Athens" and also investigate what Viator has to offer. You can then compare what you might want to see on your own with suggestions others will hopefully offer here.

A few who have taken trips to Delphi also went a bit further north and east to Thermopylae, but unfortunately, other than several monuments, they report there is not much there. The same goes for Marathon the site of another very famous battle of the Greco-Persian wars. I haven't taken this tour yet but have taken the day trip from Athens to Delphi- I think it is well worth seeing.
  • We did this tour in August. Your first breakfast at the hotel looking out at the Acropolis will be memorable. Unless you are an archaeological junkie, there will be plenty of opportunities to absorb this aspect during the tour/cruise, particularly when you visit the Acropolis museum and Ephesus in Turkey, so visiting other sites (Delphi, Marathon etc) may be overdoing this aspect.
Agree with Teach2617 about deciding on things to do.

We enjoyed the tour/cruise although a little hot at that time of year. The part we didn't like was the carpet demonstration after lunch at a restaurant in Kusadasi. We felt under pressure to buy something as soon as the demonstration finished - multiple "salesmen" spread out among the group and they were persistent in trying to get you to commit to a purchase you had no interest in.
  • Thanks for suggestions. Any good local restaurants for meals on our own in Athens? Have been looking at things to do around Athens. Sorry to hear about rug pressure after the lunch, we are not going to be interested either. When given the choice of tours with Tauck any stand out?
