Insect Repellent

I am spending an inordinate amount of time trying to decide what insect repellent to buy. Our trip is in May which is in rainy season, and I'm very concerned about mosquitoes (they LOVE me) and tsetse flies. There are so many different ingredients and so many different types (spray, wipes, lotions), that I am totally at a loss. Tauck recommends DEET, but there is a problem if you have it on your hands and touch camera equipment or clothing with synthetic materials. Has anyone used any of the non-DEET products and did you have success with it? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated (especially from those who have taken this trip in May). Thanks!
