We didn’t need them for our trip. If you are at all unsteady they might be useful. If you have not used them before, be sure to practice because they can be lethal for people around you. I’ve been almost tripped up by careless people swinging them behind them or not moving the poles correctly as they walked. I’ve also had someone randomly point with one in their hand and nearly poke my eye out.
The main thing about Patagonia are the tremendous winds.
The only time they'd really be needed is if you elect to do the condor hike, and as of Feb23, hiking poles were provided for participants on that hike.
