    Sometimes if you leave it in the morning it will be back in you room before dinner. Worse case is overnight.

It has gone more casual with time so newer posts reflect current practices. After reading it all, decide what you're comfortable with.

    Choc, I got jeans back from the laundry on the Douro the same day - leave it in the morning on my bed in the provided bag and it was back that afternoon. On the Rhine it once took overnight. They're pretty quick. If you absolutely have to have it back the same day, talk to the folks at reception.
