Nancy, I think transiting through Istanbul will not be as bad as originating there. There should be a few less layers of security. IST is the 4th largest airport size wise in the world. Be prepared for some long walks. If you are in business class and can use the Turkish lounge it is well worth spending a couple of hours there.
My comment on the security at IST: Because of my Hip replacements, I can't do the normal metal detector without setting it off and need to do the x-ray. I've been doing it now for 11 years. It was definitely a pain in the A#$%!e having to do the metal detector scanning 3 times, with each body pat down more thorough than the last. But like John said, Turkish Airlines was very nice as well it has a non -stop flight from IST to SEA (Seattle) where we live.
