Tanzania visa application, point of Departure

I am going on the Great migration this summer and am trying to fill out the Tanzania Visa application...They ask point of DEPARTURE, which accorind to Tauck is Musoma, but that is not one of the drop down options on the visa application....How have others filled out the VISA when it came to that question? any other sticky parts of the application? I have been in commuication with Tauck but so far they are stumped as well ...I thought I would ask others what they did...thank you...

  • Can you give more details? If you are flying out of Tanzania then Tauck needs to tell you where. Did you speak to what is called ‘The Journey Preparation Department’ My husband spoke to a regular Tauck rep who gave him one answer and they transferred him to them. They both gave different answers for various parts of the visa. He was not exactly impressed by them. We just did visas for nine people but are on the Family safari. Tauck strongly advised us not to do the visas too soon but you can do them any time as they only begin the day you arrive and last up to a year from that date. Their argument was the visa could change. Bur once you have it that’s it. They also said most don’t people apply until they have paid the final invoice. In case I guess you have to cancel. We took the chance because we will be away just before the tour and don’t want the hassle. We are glad it’s all done. If you give more detail maybe Me B can help. He’s in eclipse mode right now.

  • Ok, just looked at your itinerary
What airport are you flying out of Tanzania from? Tauck must tell you! It is their tour!
The visa form is tricky, for example, one thing you come across is that Kilimanjaro airport has different initials in Tanzania than it is known internationally. Some of our visa came in under twenty four hours.

  • I am sorry I can't help you on the departure point. I guess Tauck will have to define it as British says. I have just gone through the eVisa process for Tanzania for an upcoming trip Tauck K&T trip in Sept 2024 and will pass on my experience navigating the epay section of that process. Once you have filled in all the eVisa details you will be passed to the Government of Tanzania Electronic Payment Gateway. (GePG). For me, that was where the fun began! For my personal visa, I had no problems. I used a Bank of America credit card. On entering the details and initiating payment, I received a text from B of A with a validation code. In it went to the transaction on GePG and two days later I had my visa. Using exactly the same process and credit card my wife's visa payment would not go through on GePG. Kept on getting a page saying check credit card details. I tried over the next two weeks using different cards (all B of A) and all failed at the same point in the process. I even went as far as generating a new Visa application for her, but with the same failure. Then this last Sunday I just tried the original file again with the original card and it went through no problem. So all this to tell you that you might have payment difficulties when you get that far. But it looks like if you keep at it, it will eventually go through. I am still not sure if the the problem is with GePG or the B of A banking interface. I would be interested in your experience when you get there. BTW GePG was totally unresponsive to multiple emails on the problem. So no help there. Good luck!!

  • My husband reminded me that the website crashed several times or was unavailable but it did save the info he had put in. It took three days to do all nine of ours because of time he could give to them and carefully checking and rechecking all info. Like I mention, once done most visas came through in less or just more than 24 hours. One of them was a single entry for a British passport. The same credit card was used every time.
    How is it going stm?

My credit card company rejected one of my payments. I confirmed it was valid and then it went through. I would recommend calling your credit card company before making the payment, and tell them what and where about the payment. That might save you some trouble. Also, on the drop down menus: The listing order is not always logical and the place/name may not be exactly what is expected. You may have to read all of the offerings carefully. It could be listed for the place immediately on the other side of the border. Look it up on Google maps. The airport identifier is MUZ.

I just did these visas so I’m a little confused. Is this the departure point for entering Tanzania or departing?

  • Thank you all for your comments….I am stumped at the beginning of the Visa process when it asks for departure point when we are leaving (departing)Tanzania…British, thank you for your suggestion of the Journey Preparation Department ….Sealord, was MUZ listed as a departure point on your Tanzania Visa? I have not had attempted to fill out the visa app since I posted my question but hopefully will have more answers next week…I do appreicate how helpful everyone is on this forum…

    Have you seen this site?
    https://visa.immigration.go.tz/guidelines

    I found this

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musoma_Airport
That must be the airport Tauck uses, others are too far away

If only you hadn’t booked the Great Migration tour with Tauck. The visa would have been straightforward. Just my opinion, having been to Kenya and Tanzania twice with Tauck and Tanzania Zanzibar with them too….No need to spend extra money on this short and most expensive tour, you see plenty of animals without having to chase around to find the migration whose dates change depending on when the rains come.

Well Stm, I’ve looked at your itinerary, and the ‘map’ of your journey on the ‘Great Migration’ page. The map shows you flying out of a place called ‘Lamai’ but that is the name of a safari camp. It appears to be something of a sight seeing flight, but that’s what it shows as the departure point. I would call Tauck and ask about that.

By the way, the flights are not always non-stop. On our last K&T the itinerary shows five flights, but it was actually six because we made a stop enroute on one leg.

I would guess they must depart from or land at an airport that is on the list of Tanzania entry/exit points, but I can’t see what that might be.

  • Tauck did get back with me…the point of deparature is Mwanza International Airport…thanks all for your input!

  • Woo hoo. Enjoy the tour and please post a review.

  • That makes sense. I was pretty sure they would have to pass through one of Tanzania’s designated entry/exit points of immigration purposes.
