Need $1's and $5's?

Doing the VCT trip Feb. 4, 2025...do we need crisp $1's and $5's? What are they used for, and how much should we bring?

The sellers in Vietnam will gladly take American currency. It's nice to have some small bills if you want to purchase a souvenir. They like new, crisp bills. I think the people they exchange money with don’t want old bills.

You don't need a lot unless you really expect to buy a lot of stuff.

  • We used lots of $1 and $5. They won’t take a bill that is heavily creased or any tears, but otherwise they were happy to accept everywhere. We probably brought about $100 in small bills.

  • Exactly, some places would not take anything below a $10 bill that is not clean and crisp. Usually they accept $1 and $5

Again, 75 to 80% of all places take American credit card in Vietnam. Only the post office (certain counters and locations)and the Reunification Palace would absolutely take cash.

  • getting crisp bills is not a trivial task. At my local bank, they are readily available around Christmas or by special order

  • Yes, agree about getting crisp bills from the bank. They frequently just say you get what you get. These days, we regularly keep decent bills to one side as we acquire them for future trips

  • Try American Express
