Is it better to do Eastbound or Westbound on Danube river cruise

Please let me know your thoughts and why you think that way

  • I'll give you one consideration, out of others I'm sure you will see here.

Prague and Budapest are not relatively well serviced airports for international flights to North America, unlike say Paris or London. Presently, as one example, there is only one n/s flight (DL) between Prague and NY. So, I think one consideration for eastbound vs westbound are flight timings and any necessary connections between your home city and the city where you end the cruise.

you will have to make one connecting stop, usually Paris or Frankfurt, upon returning to the States. East or west everything will be the same. Just depends on which city you want to be visiting when the trip ends.

  • We just ended a Danube cruise in Budapest. As far as flights are concerned, We live in Philly and came home via Madrid. Our friends flew back to Philly via Zurich. We were all happy in our choices.
I haven’t taken the Tauck Danube, so no idea where it begins and ends, but I have been on the land tour that goes to Budapest and Prague. If you are wanting to know which city deserves more time, they are both equal in my eyes. On our recent second visit it Budapest, we saw lots of different things we did not see on our last visit. I would add time in any city where it starts and ends because on river cruises you definitely see less than on land tours.
If you are wanting to know about room choice, which side of ship etc, then it’s best to leave your cabin and go in the panoramic lounge or deck to see everything. In one port we were docked next to another ship and could clearly see a couple relaxing on their bed in the other ship, it was just a couple of feet away, it was so funny.

  • I prefer Prague over Budapest and we usually go a couple days early and therefore eastbound worked for us

  • They are both gorgeous cities, with plenty to do and see. Can't go wrong spending time in either. Get to the Szechenyi Baths in Budapest - largest spa and bath complex in Europe. The famous 16th-century Infant Jesus of Prague statue is located in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Prague. The adjacent museum houses statue's collection of robes that are changed for the liturgical season.

  • I have only been to both cities briefly as an extension to business travel and enjoyed both of them, leaning more towards Prague due to it being unscathed by WWII.

I would add pre-and-post days then choose the direction based on airlines offering the most direct routes and savings.
