Are sport jackets really required for formal Vienna palace

My husband would really not have to take a sport jacket so just wonder if he will be allowed. We are traveling for 10 days before independently so packing light. This is for the Danube River cruise especially the Vienna Palace dinner, etc.

We did this river cruise years ago. My husband wears jackets and suits only when necessary he wore one for this occasion. I doubt they wound not allow him to participate but as I recall most, if not all, men had sport coats or suits. Hope this helps.

Just to paint the other side of this picture I went to this same concert in September 2011 and I and the majority of men didn't wear a coat or suit or tie. It's a personal thing to me. If you wear a coat when you go out for dinner at home then continue to do so on holidays but I simply can't see the point in filling up valuable bag space with something you may only use a couple of times. If you choose not to take a coat then like me and many others you will not look out of place.
