ms Jewell Rooms 231/232

My husband and I are wanting to book a 2015 Christmas market tour along the Rhine on the ms Jewell. We are considering one of the category 3 rooms (231 and 232) on the Ruby Deck. Since these are right next to the engines, we are wondering how noisy these rooms are compared to rooms down the hall which are category 4 and more expensive. Are they worth the extra $350 pp? How loud are the engines? Does anyone have experience with this issue? We are new at river cruising so appreciate any feedback you have.

Thanks, Joyce

  • We were in 231 on the Swiss Emerald (identical ship) last July and one of the mid-deck Ruby cabins last December. We liked the layout in 231 better than the Cat 4 cabin. We weren't bothered by engine noise...seems to be very well insulated, but that's just our perception. We'll definitely choose this cabin on future trips.
  • Joyce, one thing to consider is the distance for those aft rooms. On the plus side you're close to the bistro for morning drinks, early breakfast, and snacks. On the downside, you're the furtherest from everything else on the ship - the reception area, leaving/returning from tours, meals, social functions in the lounge, running back to your cabin to fetch something, etc. If you want the extra steps great, if not you might want something a little closer. We had a Cat 4 last summer about mid ship. Good location and it was a great size for a 1 week cruise.

Am curious Portolan what the layout difference is. The photos on the website make them look just like a Cat 4 but shot from a different angle.

Didn't the website have 360 degree photos last year? Wish they would return.
  • Joyce HHI, On the 2 riverboats we've taken, with 3rd next April, we have always chosen Category 1, large enough, excellent price, also very convenient to everything on & off the boat. In the cabin so little time but to shower, change clothes, sleep, quite enough for us. Most of the cabins are for crew, always very quiet. What Claudia said in her response about distance, makes sense as veteran riverboat cruisers.
