ALUMS of this trip... did you get immunizations?

Looking at the CDC website, they suggest that travelers to China should get HepA and typhoid vaccinations. Did you get them before when you went to China? Thanks for letting me know.

  • Suggest you talk to your travel Dr specialist, only they can talk about your health history and the risk you take not getting vaccinated. If it was me, I would get all these done if I was traveling anywhere out of the US.
  • My wife and I took this excellent tour in Oct 2013. We did get both of the vaccinations and it's better safe than sorry. But I have to say, having taken this tour I would be pretty comfortable without the vaccinations. You are visiting major tourist sites, staying at top of the line hotels and eating at great restaurants. Unless you are going to by buying food from the street markets in Beijing you should be fine. This is only my humble opinion and I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. I do know that you will have a great time on this tour!
  • Hi Soun80,

I would second British's advice to speak to a doctor, whether it be your primary care physician or a travel specialist. Either way, they are able to make a specific recommendation for you while taking into account your medical history, which is more useful than any speculation on a public forum like this would be. And generally, we advise that you're better off getting the vaccination than skipping it. Better safe than sorry, after all.

  • Thanks to those who replied. Special thanks to gregoryjones1022 for your insight. Much appreciated! I do like to be adventurous and sample some of the street food so I'd probably get the vax just to be in the safe side. Thanks again!

We toured China and Lhasa, Tibet with another wonderful company several years ago. We did not get any shots because none were recommended. However, as others have said, do follow the advice of your doctor. We were also told not to eat any of the street food--advice that we followed. We did not get sick. Brush your teeth with bottled water and do not order ice since it may be frozen from their tap water. We were warned not to buy bottled water on the street. Some of the poorer people collect empty bottles and refill them with their tap water, which can make you very ill. While I'm sure that Tauck will provide you with plenty of bottled water for free, if you're out and about on your own and need water, only buy it in a store and make sure the seal on the bottle hasn't been broken.
  • When is the most recommended time to travel in China?
  • Going on this trip in September and travel physician in Atlanta strongly recommended Hep A& B, typhoid, tetanus and a 2016 Flu. I am mor afraid of the flu vaccine than going to China so will get everything but!
  • We went to see a Dr. at the travel clinic in our network. We did get all of the shots recommended. Typhoid, Hep A and B's, TDap, Flu shot. Really you want to be prepared. He also gave us an antibiotic for intestinal bacteria, just in case. He really stressed only drinking bottled water.
  • Thanks JannEllen, phj1 and lovestravel... Will get those as well as the flu shot for the year.
