Health Insurance

Does anyone know of an reputable health insurance that act's as a primary, not a reimbursement enitity for travellers on Medicare.

Tauck says "The travelers’ insurance provided in ... (their) plan is not “primary” insurance; it is a policy designed to “fill the gap” and reimburse you for covered expenses not covered by your primary medical insurance.

In the USA, Medicare, for those of us over 65, is primary coverage where the hospital (for example) sends their bill to directly to Medicare. Tha patient does not pay anything is covered by a Medigap policy or the patient pays 20%.

Is their an isnurance company that protectes Medicare travellers while travelling outside of the USA, as primary plan and not a plan providing post-departure benefits that claim reimbursement of your medical expenses.

  • I am a Medicare traveler and feel the Tauck insurance provides what is needed. I don't see the problem. If you are concerned, take a copy of the Aon policy to a local insurance broker who can interpret what is covered and what is not covered. If you and he feel you need additional coverage he can arrange another (full or Medigap) policy for you.

Remember, this is a travel policy- it is only designed to cover you from the time you pay until the end of the tour. It has a limited pre-existing condition waiver, but is not designed to be a long-term policy that pays for continuing, long-term medical treatment. I can't imagine why you would need anything beyond the combined coverage of Medicare and Tauck/Aon for a two week tour. If your health is not good, you might examine whether travel is for you.
