In Venice now, yesterday did Venice bites tout. Was great way to see Venice, hear some history and places they take you to are all locals and you find out what true locals eat and where. Highly recommend it if they have tours that day. Very popular and they keep group small, so have to book in advance. It, also gives a difference to what you learn on tour.
When we went a number of years ago, a friend from Venice recommended the Trattoria alla Madonna. We loved it. It's a good and reasonably priced (for Venice) seafood restaurant near the Rialto Bridge. Mostly locals with a few tourists. It can get busy. Try the spaghetti with squid ink, it's delicious (but try not to get any on you!). You can find it using Google maps. They also have a web site:
