Carry on vs. daypack question

I assume that there are things one might want in a carry on bag, such as a laptop or tablet, but would not want to take off the bus in a daypack for hiking and touring, etc. Can carry on luggage safely be left on the bus?

Limited space on bus. Carry on rollers are placed under the bus. They always seem to have room.

You can always leave anything, like an un-needed sweater or an entire bag on the bus during stops. The driver either remains on the bus or the bus is locked. You just leave things in/ under your seat or in the overhead.
