Ideas for S Africa visit at front end of Tanzania - Kenya Safari?

We are signed up for Kenya-Tanzania Classic Safari this coming July and about to book flights - we are strongly considering adding 2-3 days on front end to visit S Africa. Interested in ideas for places/things to see. Seems like Cape Town is the most variety/most scenic? Suggestions for hotels?

  • I really liked CapeTown. There's lots to see and do in the city and you can take a side trip to Cape of Good Hope. A visit to the top of Table Mountain is also interesting.

We stayed at the Cape Grace Hotel and it was very nice. It's located within walking distance of quite a few things. We were on a tour with a company other than Tauck and it was the tour hotel. There are a couple of other hotels in the area but I don't know anything about them.

  • We just came back from The Classic Safari in Oct which was fantastic but I don’t see the point of many extra days on the front end in Arusha or back end in Nairobi. So you would want to check out other locations if you decide to extend your trip in my opinion. Best trip we have ever taken.

  • Agree about Cape Town. If it is going to be your only time in the southern part of Africa, then I would stay in Cape Town for longer, say a week. There is plenty to see. I’ve stayed at the Cape Grace, love it. Also stayed at the One and Only which seemed like just a fancy chain hotel compared to the independent Cape Grace…where all the celebrities preferred and where the service is wonderful.

  • So the more research I do, it looks very difficult to get from Cape Town to Arusha, like 20 hour travel time, so maybe on a different trip we do S Africa and spend extra time in Cape Town... Still researching but first look doesnt look very easy to tack on S Africa.... maybe Barcelona or Morocco...thanks for the feedback so far!

  • Getting to Southern Africa in general is a pain compared to East Africa.

  • I don't know if you're referring to flights to Cape Town from the United States of to Cape Town from other parts of Africa. We took a non-stop United flight from Newark to Cape Town and it was very nice. The aircraft was fairly new and the Business Class seats had those sliding doors. That flight doesn't go every day, however.

  • Metzel was asking Cape Town to Arusha. We have found flights to Vic Falls are the most difficult, we’ve had to do that three times now.

  • I added a week in CAPETOWN after K&T. We flew Air Kenya from Nairobi to CAPETOWN. This was pre-Covid and the flights were scheduled on select days each week. We booked a flight that took about 6-7 hours. It was a fantastic trip!

  • It sounds like the Z,B, & SA trip might be a better fit for Metzel.

  • NancyCohen - May I ask where you stayed for your week-long extension in Cape Town? I've been thinking of the 'Elegant Adventure' tour for a few years now. I almost have a friend convinced to join me.

  • We stayed at The Taj Capetown - it was in the business district. It was convenient to sites and the hotel provide a car to drive us to the waterfront and elsewhere. The service was incredible ; rooms immaculate. We were on the concierge floor with plentiful food and drinks available every afternoon/evening. Several night after extensive touring, we had our ‘dinner’ thanks to the Taj! If you have further questions, please pm me!

  • Thank you so much. I'll take a look at the hotel and its amenities.
