Single land tour accommodations

Can any single travelers share what their accommodations were like on land tours? How did they compare to the rooms that couples were assigned to?

I’m thinking about possibly doing the Puglia trip, but I don’t want to if singles get sub par rooms. I’m happy to pay a single supplement, but would not be happy to get a teeny room just because I’m traveling alone.

Thanks for any info you can share!

A friend traveled with us on a couple of Tauck tours as a single. She got essentially the same rooms that we did - she just didn't have a room mate. We even visited her in one of her rooms and it was the same layout as ours. In one hotel, she got a toom on the fifth floor and we were on the first floor (first above the lobby). There was no indication that singles were treated any different than couples in the room assignments. After all, you pay a fair size single supplement so they should treat you well.

I'll be interested to hear what others say.

  • I usually travel solo, and of all the hotels in which I've stayed during my 20 Tauck trips, in only one hotel did I feel that I was given a room that was not equal to or better than rooms given to couples. (The one that missed the mark was in the Grand Hotel Ils de Borromees in Stresa. The decor was lovely, small but adequate, but the real problem was the teeny bathroom. Still, the view of Lake Maggiore was gorgeous. Interestingly, a woman whom I later met on a different tour said that she had the exact same room and was not at all happy about it.). I did the Puglia trip, too, but in that case, shared a room with my daughter, so can't comment on the specific rooms. By the way, I have been told that it's not Tauck, but the hotels that assign the rooms.

  • Great information. Thanks, all!

  • I believe it's mixed.

On a Christmas cruise I went on there were 6 of us traveling solo and staying one night at the Tauck hotel at the start. We all had excellent rooms. I personally viewed them. On a recent land tour my husband and I got a tiny room with a great view and my brother traveling solo got a big room with a personal patio. The rest of the tour he had pretty much the same as our room.

But I've known some solos get a smaller room - big enough for one but not as large as the room we got as a couple.

As a couple we've mostly had good and even some great rooms. The one time it was definitely sub-par we very politely requested a change at the front desk. They took care of us.

  • I travel solo and don't feel like I'm getting a smaller room than couples, though I have to admit that as long as I have a nice bathroom I don't worry much about the room.

  • I’ve taken solo trips to South Africa, Namibia, au&NZ, Egypt and Jordan and India. My accommodations were the exact same as my 2 to a room travel companions. I travel to Europe on my own so no idea how those hotels assign rooms to singles.

  • I got the same rooms as couples. You do pay a single supplement of about 50%. On the tour page change the number of travelers to 1 from 2.

  • I did not experience any form of discrimination as a solo travel on a two Tauck tour of Africa. All of my accommodations were lovely.
