Ok to wear casual dress every day?

Hi all! Going on the Cruising the Seine plus Paris & London August 2, 2025 - hubs and I are sooooo excited! First Tauck trip :-). After reading a billion threads on clothing (lol), I'm thinking I'm going to wear a casual dress and sneakers EVERY DAY. That way I'll only need to change my shoes for evening, and I'll have no tops/pants/skirts to pack. Is this crazy? I don't want to look over dressed and/or make anyone on the trip uncomfortable. Any thoughts? Also - anyone else here going on same trip? Can't wait!!

  • Sounds like a great plan. In recent years I'd gotta out of the habit of wearing dresses but took two on a recent river cruise and actually loved wearing them. One was a loose rayon blend that packed really well and the other a basic tank dress easily dressed up. I did not bring hose (ugh) but did bring slip shorts aka bike shorts. Definitely want to bring alternative shoes to give your feet a break after a day of walking in the heat. It will be hot.

And no your husband doesn't need a sport coat. A nice collared shirt and slacks for the dressiest occasions. The rest of the time my husband wears 32 Degree collared golf shirts and slacks.

    Enjoy.

  • Don’t forget if church visits are on the cards to cover tops of arms.

  • LIsa, have a great trip. Claudia is spot on. My wife typically wears skorts with a tee or tank and either running shoes or chaco sandals(she brings both to give her feet a break.) For cooler day she has Kuhl roll up pants if it's cool. Always has a light scarf if going into a church or some place cool. She will occasionally wear a sporty athleta dress. You will have some deck time to lounge. There are covered areas on the deck to provide shade.

  • Hello! Like Lisa, we are taking our first Tauck trip (August 27th) and I too have been obsessing about what to wear. I love her idea of wearing the same dress during the day and to dinner. I was thinking of wearing linen pants during the day and palazzo pants for dinner. Would the linen pants also work for dinner on the riverboat and then save the palazzo pants for the few occassions where we would be more dressy, such as the captain's welcome and the evening at the chateau?

  • Perfect plan, but know you do NOT have to wear dresses at dinner unless you just want to. River Cruises have gotten MUCH MORE CASUAL since we took our 1st one with Tauck in 2013. Dresses are certainly fine, but not necessary.
We just got back from Rendezvous on the Siene in May with VERY similar ports and a dress in all those places will be fine, but know that in Rouen you will enter 2 cathedrals, so be sure your knees and shoulders are covered.
Also, at the Beaches in Normandy - you will enter Bunkers with crazy stairs and low ceilings - a dress will be fine, but know there is interesting maneuvering that day.

  • Truth be told and just my opinion: during the day, pants are just more practical.

  • Yes pants for me too.

  • I normally wear pants too. But on this past trip I saw a LOT of cool summery dresses and wide leg pants like linen during the day. It was about keeping cool & comfortable, not about being "dressed up". You certainly don't NEED a dress.

  • I don't like linen pants.  The two I have tend to wrinkle very easily and it is a challenge to maintain a nice look.

  • Again, in my opinion, too many things can go wrong wearing a dress. You can find trendy linen at Benetton (Italian brand) or Uniglo (Japanese brand) and are you sitting down, even Target. I don’t dress to impress. On a trip, I dress for comfort and surprisingly, I get compliments with a nice costume jewelry, etc. At times, I even surprise myself.

  • I wear non iron linen, I also buy from Uniqlo and recently got some great linen pants from Athleta, I intend to wear them on my next trip for casual evening wearing different tops. I have black and white.

  • I am now on Rendezvous on the Seine. Pants definitely. It has been only in low 70s and today in Paris a high of 67. I would bring a warm light weight jacket or vest. Good walking shoes are a must.
