I celebrated a birthday on this trip and every time we changed hotels there was a birthday cake for me! It was so embarrassing.

  • We are on this same tour! We arrive on 9/14. Looking forward to meeting you!
This is our first Tauck tour. We are Viking alums too!
    Barb and Dave Peden

  • We are traveling with another couple Jim and Sue. We booked a food tour for Sunday evening. Maybe we can connect before tha, we arrive at 6:40,am 9/14. Or we can connect Monday!

  • We arrive at 8:00 AM, it is possible we could end up on the same shuttle to the hotel ? This will be our third Tauck Tour. We are looking forward to meeting you both.

  • Sharing a ride to the hotel is often a disadvantage. I can’t tell you how often we have had to wait around for others, as much as an hour!

  • I have had to wait for others at the airport, like British said as much as an hour, but lately I've always had a private ride or with people that got in same time as me.

  • People are on the same plane as us several times and we’ve still waited a long time for them. Once, after waiting an hour, the person insisted on getting money from the airport so we all had to wait while she did that too

  • We are on this tour September 21-October 11. This will be our 3rd Tauck tour. Really looking forward to seeing both countries. Danette and Ron

  • Perhaps once or twice we have waited for other guests, but Tauck was gracious enough to put us in an alcove by the luggage carousels where light refreshments were offered. It was a great way to meet other travelers before the official start of the journey. We subsequently met our new companions in the lounge that evening.

  • Really! Wow, most of our tours we have had the drivers waiting by the airports exits. A couple of recent tours, they weren’t even there, we had to wait for them.

British - A Tauck representative met us. Once the six of us were ready, Tauck summoned the driver who had a van, It was on one of my Amsterdam trips. Not sure of the other one.

  • I've always had the drivers waiting by the exit in all my tours, never by the luggage carousels. A couple of times they weren't there and I had to call and wait for them to come.

  • We’ll arrive on the 12th to celebrate our 50th anniversary on the 13th. We’ll also be celebrating Doug’s birthday on the 21st.
I understand the luggage needs to be the recommended size and 50 pounds, the carry-on size and only 15 pounds, my question was about a personal item. When I contact it Tauck, I was told the personal item could be a “fanny pack “or a camera bag. When I asked about a purse, I was told most likely not. This is going be a challenge packing since we don’t fly home until October 9th.

@DeeQuill - I went on one trip (India?) where the requirements for a carry-on were quite light. It was in kg but maybe 17 pounds. So I packed light, maybe a bit over 17kg and said to myself that I'd pay the fee for an overage if necessary.

It turned out to be a joke. People were getting on the aircraft with giant suitcases and the airline didn't stop them or charge an over weight charge. The weight requirement was offical - I checked the airline website - but not enforced.

If you need to exceet the 15 pounds, I'd do so and pay the over weight charge, if they demand it. But it's likely that they'll just pass you through.

Also, I was getting on one flight and they were gate-checking carry-on bags. The guy asked for my bag but I carry electronics and lithium batteries that are not allowed in the baggage hole. So if you have those things in your carry on, make sure you tell them. The guy just waved me through when I told him about the batteries.

  • DeeQuill - I travel with a tote bag that matches my luggage and use it as my carry-on item. My purse is always a crossbody bag which fits inside the tote bag while flying. I have never had a problem, but have not taken a tour with on-tour flights.

  • On this trip two years ago, we each had a large suitcase and a small carry on; both within the Tauck guidelines. I had a cross body purse and my husband had a soft sided briefcase (Land’s End). No issues at all.

There were several people who had very large suitcases exceeding the guidelines. When I asked our director about it, he said the charter airlines are pretty lax but if they do choose to enforce the limits, those people would be stuck shipping the bag to the next destination.

  • We often take three week trips these days and just have medium suitcases and a backpack each. Do remember Australia and New Zealand are very laid back countries and there is no need to over dress. For instance there were very few men wearing jackets. In addition it’s not going to be hot so you can wear things more than once.

  • I use a Baggallini tote as my person item and pack a smaller crossbody purse in my carry-on (though it would fit in my tote). Never had a problem.
