Disembarkation time on last day

Tour description says "Tour ends at 8:00am at Keflavik International Airport. ... Allow at least 3 hours for flight check-in at airport."

Would booking a flight departure at 10:40am work, or would this be too early?

  • We spent a “post” day in Reykjavik so we didn’t pay much attention to how early you could disembark. It takes a good forty-five minutes to get to the airport, and it is probably the most inefficient airport I have ever seen. We departed in the afternoon. You are flying with the sun so you arrive not long after you depart ‘clock’ time.

  • Your itinerary says the ship is at Hafnarfjördur on the last morning, so your transport will be coordinated so that you leave the ship in time to be at the airport three hours in advance…..you will likely leave the ship at 7 am. It’s always good to call Tauck to ask if this is correct.

  • We were on this tour last year and had a late afternoon departure. Tauck surprised those of us with late departures with a bonus tour around the geothermal areas and a couple of other places before going to the airport. It was a lovely way to spend a few hours in the morning.

  • The double secret departure day excursion was nice, almost as good as (better than?) the shorter Golden Circle excursion from the previous day. We drove right through the mostly evacuated town of Grindavik. While we were flying home the current eruption started which, like the previous one, is only a short distance north of and threatening the town again. It also forced the nearby Blue Lagoon to close. I think the (fissure) eruption is still ongoing so I don’t expect the Blue Lagoon to open any time soon. If you want the thermal pool experience, to be safe, take advantage of the thermal pool at Myvatn a few days earlier.

Keflavik airport is a disorganized mess, especially for such a small airport. The immigration room, which was extremely slow, was mostly filled with new automated terminals still wrapped up. If they work whenever they are brought online, things should speed up.

We saw a huge geothermal power plant, nearby geothermal areas, bridge between the continents (continental plates), Kleifarvatn lake, a drive-thru of the former Naval Air Station, etc on our special departure-day tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Our flight was scheduled to depart at 4:45 pm.
