Bathing caps in pool?

Our tour guide said everyone needs to wear a bathing cap if they go in the pool. Is this true?

Probably. We were in Japan a couple of years ago but not with Tauck. The ‘pools’ we had in most hotels were of the Onsen type, single sex bathing rituals. You mist not put your head in the water at all, it is considered dirty. We did not have the opportunity to go into Western style pools, but because of this I’m saying probably true.

I'm sure someone will guide you, but (in my experience) when you go into a japanese public bath, you wash yourself before you get into the tub. In the older days (or maybe in a very traditional bath), you would dip water from the tub to wash yourself but today they probably have hand held shower heads.

Also, it's considered polite to be quiet. Don't start a loud conversation with a friend in the next tub.

  • No bathing cap necessary. You do not immerse your head.
