What area to stay in London

We are doing the ESW tour followed by England & the west country May of 26. We have 2 nights between tours and are planning to stay in London and hit sites the ESW tour does not. We’ve not been to London and are looking for input as the best area to stay in.

  • Do you want a cheap hotel or an expensive one. We have stayed at the Savoy….expensive, and the Strand Palace….very reasonably priced with a great restaurant….they are just about opposite each other and in a good location.

  • The “best” area is very subjective and should be based on your interests. I have only been to London once, so I am certainly not an expert.

We also stayed at the Savoy where we enjoyed the Covent Garden area and the walkway that borders the Thames. We thought it was a great area with theaters, shopping, restaurants and more. As Goddess indicated, public transportation is plentiful and easy to use.

  • Recently stayed at the Sea Containers, Southbank of the Thames with stunning views of the north bank, including Saint Pauls, which was very nice to wake up to. It's more modern but had a good breakfast buffet.

I previously stayed around the Baker St. area which was probably the most convenient location. as the Baker St. Station can connect you just about anywhere you need to do.

But you really can't choose a wrong location with the public transport as Goddess says.

  • Agree that the transport is great and as long as you are close to a tube station, you can't go too wrong. Probably the most convenient area is the West End, roughly the area around Covent Garden and Charring Cross. Easy walk to most theaters and near many sights. However, it does tend to be expensive in this area.

  • I will be on the England and West Country May 3, 2026 tour. I am getting together afterwards with a friend I met on another Tauck tour who lives in Leeds and we are staying in London for a few days at the Strand Palace. Like British says - very close to the Savoy but not as pricy.

  • Ian. Please do post your review of the tour, I would love to take it in the future’s even though Tauck seemed to have made less favorable changes to the places I would hoped to have seen such as Stonehenge, which I admit shockingly that I have not seen, and the Eden Project.

  • We stayed at the Waldorf. Great location and they had an outstanding Tea time with delicious treats.

  • British - I was also disappointed they removed Stonehenge so I rearranged things and am going in 2 days early and going to try to take a private tour there from Bath, where the tour starts. Hopefully I can make that work out. They did add Avebury in its place - maybe a shorter drive or maybe because Stonehenge is on the England, Scotland, Wales tour.

  • Avebury actually looks as if there is way more to see and do, so a good substitute and probably way less busy

  • We are staying at the Rosewood which replaced the Savoy. Good location. In the past we stayed at one of the Radisson Blue hotels very close to the British Museum. It’s the same general area and both close to the theater district.
