How active is this trip?

We know we will see a lot of beautiful scenery on this trip, but will we have time on our own to explore and walk around? We don’t love bus rides (but train, boat and funicular are fine), and we find our more memorable experiences are when we discover things in an unstructured way. How does this trip fit with that?

  • It seems as if you might be better taking an independent tour to Switzerland.

Have you reviewed the published itinerary for an estimate of the amount of free time you will have? We did a different Tauck tour of Switzerland and thought there was adequate time to explore on our own.

I agree with you about making your own memories. I understand that many travelers like to have completely orchestrated tours, but rushing from point A to point B without experiencing anything in between is not my travel style. For that reason, we always add pre-and-post tour days.

Good luck to you. Switzerland is indeed beautiful.

  • Yes you can make your own memories on independent travel but with Tauck you'll also see and experience some things you wouldn't on your own.

We took this tour in 2021 and the itinerary is mostly the same except for Day 7. I'd say most of the locations yes you did have free time to explore. San Moritz is just an overnight and nothing much there but a really nice hotel/spa. Whether the tour overall gives you as much free time as you want is personal.

When possible we add extra days pre and post tour. We used our Gift of Time (free hotel night for returning customers) in Lausanne which is a lovely city with lots of things to do and free public transport to get around. If you haven't been to Lucerne, I'd also add at least one extra night there.

I read a recent article in Business Insider written by a young woman who was surprised how much she enjoyed her river cruise versus her previous experience of independent travel. One of the things she noted was that since the cruise company takes care of all the logistics, it left her free to really enjoy what she was seeing. Link below if you're interested.
