Dinner Reservations while on Tour
I see we have dinner free several nights. I wondered if travelers made dinner reservations in smaller town or if everything worked without plans. We’ve made weekend reservations in Paris. Thank!

It depends on the day, time and type of establishment. Your tour director can offer recommendations and will advise whether reservations are necessary. The hotels’ concierges can assist as well.
No we don't because the meals Tauck provides are so large and long that on nights we're on our own we go light. On this particular tour a couple of the hotel rooms had private balconies so we could pick up a few things from a local store - wine, cheese, fruit, etc to enjoy a leisurely evening. Meals in French restaurants tend to take quite awhile. There isn't the rush you get in/out like American restaurants. Outside of Paris most of the towns we were in the restaurants we're fairly casual and it was Sep 2021 so not a huge number of tourists.
Specifically for this tour:
Versailles - we used our Gift of Time to arrive early there and since our room wasn't ready yet had lunch at a nearby place called Sisters Cafe - we'd been in Europe 2 weeks by then so a burger was appealing - there are several other casual places near it
Deauville - the day we did the Dday beach tour dinner wasn't include but our entire group (9 - it was still covid time frame) all trooped a short walk from the hotel to a pizza place called Parasole - no reservations - excellent - there are other choices nearby
The hotels in both Dinard and Miramar - our rooms had balconies - there were restaurants nearby and shops to pick up food/wine
You'll note that both nights at Château de Rochecotte dinner is provided. That's because it's basically outside of town so no where to walk to for a meal. This isn't a favorite hotel for some as the rooms we're a bit small. But to us it felted like being invited to someone's private country estate. The food was excellent and it was so quiet there.
Paris has a huge range of food choices so it really depends what you want and which hotel you're at. The one near the opera has everything from a inexpensive premade salad at a MonoP store to high end dining.
Kimberly, if there is a specific high end or unique restaurant, then yes. If you are traveling during the summer(particularly August), then probably. The coast is a popular summer weekend or vacation spot. Imagine Cap Cod in the summer versus the winter. We were there in September and the shop were in the process of getting rid of their merchandise and some of the home were shuttered for winter. In Deauville, we also had pizza a Parasole, turn over is fast and no reservations are needed. Some ate at L'instituion and had a great experience. Both are 3 minutes from the hotel and right around the corner from each other. We stayed in St Malo, so I cannot speak about Dinard. There are numerous options in Port Du Crouesty right across from the hotel along the harbor. Le Cap Horn seemed the most popular with tourist and locals. On your site seeing cruise from Vannes, our lunch was fairly substantial, more than I could eat.
When I did this tour back in 2019 - the only reservation we made prior to arrival in France was for the Chef's Table at Gordan Ramsey's Au Trianon which we did the night before the tour officially started.
During the tour - on our free nights
Port de Crouesty - we picked up a baguette, some butter and prosciutto and enjoyed it on our balcony at the hotel as our stomach needed the break from all the eating
St Malo - we went to an Italian restaurant in walking distance from the hotel that was on the list provided by our guide. It was excellent!
Deauville - we had the hotel make us reservations at La Flambe which was in walking distance to the hotel
Our trip in Paris - we ended up with heavy snacks after our visit to Louvre which more than made up for the lack of dinner.
