Preparing for Scandinavia from mid/late May

We are ready for our tour in 29 days!! Very excited. Any thoughts from others who travelled in late May re: weather? It would seem we should be prepared for it to be a bit chilly like Iceland and Ireland? We are also staying an extra day in Bergen and would like thoughts on extra sites and restaurants (near the hotel Bors?). Other thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance. Happy Travels.

  • Be prepared for rain. Cool in the fjordlands for sure. Layers always a good way to go.
Be sure to try reindeer steak.
St Mary's Church is the oldest existing building in Bergen and in continuous use since early medieval times. The Hanseatic Museum is very interesting. Bergen was one of Northern Europe's largest cities during the Hanseatic period (14th-15th centuries).

  • Following. We are on the June 3 tour.

  • Spring is the perfect time to visit the region. Cool temperatures but warmer at lower elevations. Layering is the best way to handle temperature variations. As mentioned, a rain jacket, preferably one with a removable liner and hood will suffice for outerwear—that is if you have adequate layers. Moreno wool and cashmere are lightweight and offer superior warmth.

Bergen is one of my favorite cities for its beauty and walkability. You can easily spend hours in the wharf area wandering through the shops. Take the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen for spectacular views. I agree that the Hanseatic Museum offers an excellent history of Bergen. Time permitting, take the Flåm Railway. You will need tickets in advance.

Sadly our favorite restaurant and one we dined at for years did not survive the pandemic. You can find some regional food at the Fisketorget (fish market)—the one on the wharf and the enclosed one.

Have a marvelous journey and please post a critique of your experiences.
