Diplomatic conversation

I am looking forward to giving Tauck a try. I’ve traveled since I was 6 months old, and both my parents and husband were work-related world travelers. I never thought I would need such travel security as Tauck offers senior citizens, but I very much do, as a septuagenarian and a recent widow, but I am apprehensive about it all, which is in itself an alien experience. Much as I want the companionship of peers, I do worry about the atmosphere that exists due the U.S.’s current administration. How have people been handling political conversation? I badly need a break from aggressive speechifying, living as I do in Washington DC. Any reassurance is very welcome!

Excellent feedback by BSP51 and MCD. In the unlikely event someone attempts to engage you in political discussions, respectfully but firmly let them know you are not interested.

    Thank you,

Ditto on all the above commentary. Go and enjoy yourself. I’ve been on 17 Tauck tours and many with other companies. It’s not an issue.

If you run into someone who just won't stop (I did one time) remember that you're probably never going to see that person again and just tell him or her to "shut up".

But, in general, most people avoid politics like the plague.

I agree with the comments, but let’s be honest: over the course of the tour, you generally get a sense of where some other people stand based on “code words” or phrases like “the current administration”, etc. In those cases, either participate, change the subject, or move on.

Mike is right: you are never gonna see any of these people ever again. Relax.

I wouldn’t worry about, two tours and no political conversations. Actually, my husband and I had a good laugh. Small group tour, one couple from Texas and two Asian couples from California. On paper, you wouldn’t think they were going to form a group - they did! Go enjoy!

In 2016 I took a tour of the Balkans with another company. On the first night the TD told us that there would be no discussion of American politics, but we secretly and quietly found our tribe. I would never express my political views loudly or openly while on holiday. Recently I was on a jaunting cart trip through the Gap of Dunloe in Killarney National Forrest. I was with three other like minded people. When the driver heard our friendly discussion he told us he had to stop his cart once and tell the two warring couples he would dump them both out and make them walk to the first lake where they could get a boat back to Ross Castle. I have never been happier to be in my mid 70s 🤣
