  You always want some money to make small purchases, but should have no problem using visa for other purchases. Make sure you inform bank of travel and you don't have card that charges to make conversion to dollars.
  
  Capital One no transaction fees and Bank Americard Travel no transaction fees just to name 2.

  Most retailers will take credit cards. I did find one in a small town in Germany last year that would not take credit for a 14 euro purchase. Mostly I use cash for small souvenirs, post cards, snacks, etc. You could easily do a week cruise with no more than 100 euros. On board the ship its strictly credit if you want to buy something from the ship's boutique, have laundry done, or use the salon/masseuse services.
  
  Like crackers said, check with your bank about any foreign transaction fees or other charges. Same for your debit card. Also, when you charge its best to charge in euros NOT dollars. You'll get a better conversion rate that way.

  We just returned from our cruise on the ms Joy. It was just fantastic. We purchased a small amount of Euros, Czech Kronas, and Hungarian Forints before the trip. In each port we visited Tauck gave us a map and it noted ATM locations. Most places took credit cards however some will not allow tips to be added so cash is necessary. Enjoy your trip. It's magical.
