Dress code for women at dinner

I've never been on a river cruise and would like to know what is appropriate for ladies to wear in the evenings and at dinner. What kind of activities are there during the evenings?

I assume you are talking about Tauck river cruises- they are not your mother's cruise. The trend has been to be more casual no dinner jackets for men, in fact generally no jacket at all. Women tend to dress nicer but still not dressy. No formal or evening dresses, no cocktail dresses. Leave the good (real) jewelry at home. The term often used is "smart casual." Look in the forum archives of any of the Tauck cruises and you will find many discussions on this topic. Just search on "Cruise attire."

Same goes for evening activities- the main activity is early to bed to rest up for another busy day of touring. Remember, the ship moves at night, so you most of the day off the ship touring local towns and on excursions. There may be a few local musicians, folk dancers, etc. maybe a lecture on some cultural or historic topic on some tours on some nights. No big production floor shows like seagoing cruise ships. No casino. There is a bar, but no drinking or limbo contests. : )

We've done 3 Tauck river cruises. All that Alan said especially about reading the older posts even from tours that aren't the one you're planning.

Evening entertainment is pretty low key. Dinners are long and leisurely. Some nights there might be a group game to play in the lounge or a crew show. There is also an on demand movie system in your stateroom. The selection isn't huge but nicely themed to the cruise you're on. If the weather is good its also nice to just chill out on the sun deck. Bring a wrap or sweater even for summer cruise. Its gets cool up there.
