First, we are not foodies (to me Michelin means tires : ) ), so eating in a "top" or "starrred" restaurant was not on our things to pre-arrange. Second, it is hard to find a bad place to eat in Italy. So, we relied on the recommendations of the TD or hotel concierge.
  • We were on the Classic Italy last October.....the tour director will recommend restaurants for you to try...we enjoyed Il Profeto in Florence which was a short walk from the Westin......as for Rome when we were on our own we chose to eat at the small outdoor cafes and were never disappointed.!
  • Like Alan, we are not foodies, but we dearly love good meals that won't break the bank! Of the 26 tours we've taken, most were not with Tauck, but of all of them Classic Italy followed by the Warsaw, Budapest, Vienna, and Prague tours are probably our favorites! All would be with Tauck if we had the money! Tauck's tour schedule in Florence is not exactly the same as it was in 2004 when we took the tour, but it should still be doable. After we visited the Accademia and The David, we went to the nearby San Lorenzo area on our own for lunch and to visit the Medici Chapel afterwards. Our niece and our tour director, the wonderful Andrea, both recommended ZaZa. We devoured wonderful spinach stuffed ravioli followed by fantastic tiramisu. If Tauck doesn't include the Medici Chapel, please be sure to visit it on your own to see the Micelangelo sculptures of Dawn and Dusk. The night before that we dined at Ristorante Paoli, which had been suggested by Andrea. We had ribolitta, which is a very, very thick vegetable soup, followed by a steak. While both were delicious, we didn't need both! The soup was filling enough without the steak.
  • We are also on an early October Tuscany tour and will be spending time in Florence prior. A friend from Italy recommended ZaZa restaurant as well.
Can anyone recommend a guided museum tour that they have done in Florence?
    Grazie!
  • Hello all,

We dearly love Italy and worked there for several years. We are not on your trip, heading to Iceland on Tauck.

If you want an outstanding dinner experience, go to Hostaria Romana in Rome. Located just off Piazza Barberini. I do suggest reservations. It does get crowded. Delicious Roman food, in a local fashion.

    Enjoy
