W HOTEL AMSTERDAM

we spent three nights at the W in Amsterdam. It has had some bad reports, so we were concerned about staying there because it is also so expensive.
For us, it was a great hotel. People might note that it is no longer operated by Sheraton, Marriott has taken over this brand.
We arrived at the hotel from the ship about 10am, hotel staff were waiting for us all, they quickly organized taking our carry on bags into secure storage, brought us a coffee, got our cell phone number and then we headed out to site see. The Palace is just opposite the hotel and we had booked tickets on line, so we headed there. About 11am, we got a call to say our room was ready, so after finishing seeing the Palace (fantastic by the way) we headed back to the hotel and quickly unpacked before heading out again.
Our room was on the bank side of this two tower hotel, we thought it was excellent. Walked into a room with about twenty feet of mirrored wall, large mirrored closet, suitcase stand and a drawer with a safe, iron and ironing board. Great modern lighting that went from very bright to dim, good A/C controls. Separate toilet with light that automatically turns on. King bed, comfortable and best pillows of the whole trip. Plenty of outlets. Large round low bath in the actual bedroom which we used on two evenings to relax our weary bones in bubbles before heading out dinner to relax after the100 degree weather we were experiencing. Good sized sink with plenty of places to put wash bags in the room and towel rail. Super shower where you just push a button to turn the shower heads on and off, not seen those anywhere in the US but is what we were used to in the UK more than thirty years ago. So,some mentioned no towel hook near the shower, there were towels on the shelf right outside the door. Lots of nice smelling toiletries from face wash to body lotion. Coffeee machine, tea kettle. Bath robes and slippers, can’t think of anything else. The Porter restaurant in the other part of the hotel we used for breakfast, it’s on the roof and we sat at tables outside with a great view of the city roof tops.

The W has a Michelin star restaurant called the Duchess, we booked a table. We don’t eat out much at home but when we do we like fine or fine fine dining. This restaurant was a huge disappointment, we cannot recommend it. It was also very casual, people in shorts etc and not busy, suspicious huh!
It was around 100 degrees while we were in Amsterdam, so for ease we ate the two other nights at a fish restaurant about a three minute walk from the hotel. We could recommend them but advise reservations
