Round #76 won by SueMS
Submitted by Sealord. It is one of two 3500 years old Egyptian Sphinxes portraying Amenhotep III wearing the dual crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. They were originally from a temple in Thebes but are now located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. They arrived in 1830. By the time the initial purchase proposal made it from the Embassy in Cairo to Nicholas I of Russia and then to the Russian Academy of Arts, both had been sold to a French buyer. As a result of the French Revolution, Saint Petersburg got the sphinxes after all. They can be seen today on the waterfront in front of the Imperial Academy of Arts.

Submitted by TravelGuy. Belvedere Palace in Vienna, Austria. The Kiss the famous painting by Gustav Klimt resides there.
Round #85 JohnS got that one was a flamenco dancer and in Spain, and while there were some (often ‘interesting’ ) additional guesses (while it may have been “flamenco” I still think it was a Pasadoble ), there was no overall winner.
Submitted by Sealord. Photo of female flamenco dancer and rider first silhouetted in a window (we still don’t know what that’s all about ), then, in subsequent photos, were performing a flamenco dance in a bull ring- the woman and the horse both danced the flamenco, the rider and horse performed using dressage. There were a number of flamenco dancers who also performed in the stands. This was at a private estate just north of Malaga, in Cartama, Spain on Tauck’s “Treasures of Spain and Portugal” small ship cruise aboard Windstar’s “Wind Surf”.
Round #86 is officially open. Submit your photo in a reply [Leave a Comment] to this announcement.

Gee, I recognize those umbrellas!
The umbrellas are certainly the most memorable thing in the pictures...
Where? Hacienda Mamcona outside Lima, Peru
What kind of horses and what are they known for? Peruvian Paso Horses distinguished by a natural, four-beat, lateral gait called the paso llano
What is one theory as to the origin of their gait? Selective breeding for a gait gentle on long distance riders.
What is the significance of the ribbons worn by the horses? Darned if I remember. They look like they represent the position of the horses in the show and may indicate relative experience. For our show, there was one brown (or badly discolored red), two red and three green ribboned horses. Mostly they seemed to alternate from side to side as shown in my picture above.
Yup.
The gait of the Peruvian Paso results in what is claimed to be the smoothest horse ride in the world, no bouncing up and down like a on a typical horse doing clopeta, clopeta.
The main theory, supported by DNA, is that these horses are descendants of smooth-gaited horses, generally known as Palfreys that existed in Europe in the Middle Ages. The Jennet in particular was noted for its ambling gaits. Peruvian Pasos trace their ancestry to these ambling Jennets; as well as to the Barb, which contributed strength and stamina; and to the Andalusian which added style, conformation and action. After that they were carefully bread and trained to maintain it. One unsupported theory is that some of these horses escaped from the Spanish conquistadors and roamed the coastal areas of Peru, many areas of which were desert like with hot sand, so the horses developed this gait to keep their hooves from getting too hot.
As explained to us, the ribbons were representative of the horse's success in competition- the specific meanings of the colors or patterns were never explained. The point being, unlike tail ribbons used in the UK and elsewhere they do not represent the horse's age, a particular skill, or most especially temperament- don't get behind a horse in the UK with a red ribbon tied to its tail- it is a kicker!
My wife rode while I mostly shot video. She claims it was an incredibly smooth ride.
They are beautiful horses. While they require some training to refine their gait, foals are born with it.
We visited Hacienda Mamacona in Lurin, Peru, about 25km south of Lima, on the Peru & Galapagos trip.
